In the worldwide information market, the individual is confronted with a rapidly growing number of information providers. To present a uniform platform for document research and delivery and to integrate these different information services is the aim of the UniCats project.

The UniCats Project started in the year 1998 at the university of Karlsruhe. It is a part of the strategic research initiative "Distributed Processing and Exchange of Digital Documents" ( V'''D'') of the German Research Foundation ( DFG).

In the year 2003, the project continued under the name UniCats-i.
